Harris Rundle opened his first practice in Belfast in 1905. Still a young man, he previously had outlets in the North of England.

The business expanded over the following years, with branches opening as far afield as Cork, Dublin and Londonderry.

In the photograph below Mr Rundle is performing an eye examination dressed in tails.

Harris Rundle's son Cecil joined the firm in 1932.

He consolidated the business over the next 40 years, taking it through the introduction of the NHS in 1948.

Cecil's son Alan qualified in London in 1976.

Alan is currenty Managing Director of the company, up-holding the strong family tradition of this leading firm of Opticians, which celebrated its centenary in 2005.

Alan is pictured below with his daughter Lucy Rundle who has just graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Optometry from Glasgow University.
